Patty Dowdell

A 1982 graduate, Patty was the leader of the 1981 volleyball team which still holds the school record in wins at 57, and finished 2nd in the AIAW-Division II National Tournament where she earned All-Championship honors.  Patty played for the U.S. National Team from 1974-1980 and was a member of the 1980 Olympic team. She played major league volleyball for the Dallas Belles and Chicago Breeze, and is a member of the USVBA Hall of Fame Court of Honor and was named MVP at the 1984 USVBA National Tournament.  After her playing career she spent six years as the assistant volleyball coach at the University of Iowa followed by seven years as head coach of the volleyball team at Texas Women’s University. She was the head volleyball coach at Texas Woman’s University from 1996-2002.

Patty is said to have been the first American woman recognized as a versatile, all around player.

In 1988, she received the USA Volleyball’s “All Time Great Player” award. Patty was also recognized by the Volleyball Hall of Fame’s “Court of Honor” as part of the 1980 U.S. Olympic Team.
