HOUSTON, Texas -- The Texas Lutheran men's track and field team traveled to Houston to compete in the FasTrak Athletix Collegiate Classic on Saturday at Yeoman Fieldhouse at the University of Houston. Saturday was a record-setting day for Texas Lutheran as the Bulldogs broke three program records.
After winning their first race of the season last weekend, the TLU 4x400m relay team comprised of Eden Perez (Hebbronville/Hebbronville), David Hinojosa (Edinburg/McAllen), Caden Keller (McAllen/McAllen), and Braylen Brown (San Antonio/Randolph) found themselves in the TLU record books as the squad finished second only to Houston Christian with a program record time of 3:20.79. The Bulldogs edged out the previous record of 3:20.91 set in 2018.
Amir McClain (Converse/Veterans Memorial), who set the outdoor triple jump record last spring, broke the indoor triple jump record on Saturday with a mark of 14.0m (45' 11.25") - breaking the previous record held by Caimen McDonough (44' 8 3/4", 2019) to finish eighth overall. McClain also finished eighth in the long jump with a mark of 6.50m (21' 4").
The Yeoman Fieldhouse continued to be a good place for the TLU Distance team as Jonas Martinez (Edinburg/Homeschool) shattered the program record for the indoor 5K with a time of 15:42.36, besting the previous record held by Blake Westbrook (17:21.83, 2018) by almost two minutes. The time placed Martinez 12th overall and fifth amongst Division-III runners.
Braylen Brown, an All-American in the outdoor 400m dash last season, finished fifth overall and first amongst Division-III sprinters in the event with a time of 49.11 seconds.
Hezekiah McDow (Goliad/Weiss) finished 11th overall and first amongst Division-III sprinters in the 200m dash with a time of 22.35 seconds.
Garrett Haass (La Vernia/La Vernia) finished fifth in the 60m hurdles with a time of 8.4 seconds.
Parker Cabra (Schertz/Randolph) finished fifth in the high jump with a final mark of 1.95m (6' 4.75").
