LONGVIEW, Texas -- After dropping the series opener on Friday, the #RV Texas Lutheran Baseball team picked up a pair of wins over LeTourneau on Saturday to sweep the doubleheader and win the series with 8-6 and 6-3 comeback victories at Conrad-Vernon Field in Longview.
In Saturday's first game,
Adam Peavy (Houston/Memorial) wnt 2-for-4 with three RBI, while
Cole Cravens (Round Rock/Round Rock) went 3-for-4 with two RBI.
Parker Schutte (Arlington/Lamar) had a clutch relief outing, pitching the final two innings in shutout fashion to record his second save of the season.
Jack Grames (Elgin/Elgin) got the start, pitching seven innings and allowing six runs on eight hits and three walks while striking out seven.
A two-RBI double from
Adam Peavy got the scoring started in the first inning before
Cooper Jen (Kyle/Hays) and
Cole Cravens followed up with RBI singles to give TLU an early 4-0 lead. Peavy tacked on another run for TLU with an RBI single in the second inning.
LeTourneau answered and slowly chipped away at the TLU lead - tying the game and overtaking the Bulldogs in the seventh inning.
The Bulldogs jumped back into the lead in the eighth inning to go up 7-6 after RBI singles from
Chase Bourgeois (League City/Clear Falls) and
Michael Barrera (San Antonio/East Central).
A sacrifice fly from Cravens tacked on an insurance run in the ninth. LeTourneau was able to get the tying run on with just one out but the ball would never leave the infield again as Schutte was able to close out the win.
In the series finale,
Caleb Small (Round Rock/Gateway College Preparatory) hit a go-ahead homer in the eighth to help Texas Lutheran secure the series.
Small went 1-for-4 with the two-run home run in the eighth.
Brayden Sprencel (Robstown/Calallen) and
Kadyn Hall (La Grange/La Grange) each finished 2-for-4 with an RBI.
Triston McGowan (Vidor/Vidor) went the distance Saturdat evening, allowing three runs on four hits and two walks in his complete game effort.
The Bulldogs scored a run in the first on a sacrifice bunt from Peavy. An RBI triple from
Chase Bourgeois doubled the lead to 2-0 in the second inning.
LeTourneau tied the game with a two-run home run in the fourth.
The Bulldogs retook the lead in the sixth inning on an RBI single from
Kadyn Hall to make the game 3-2 before the YellowJackets would knot the game at three in the seventh.
Small launched the go-ahead two homer with two outs in the eighth inning. An RBI single from
Brayden Sprencel in the ninth brought the game to its final score of 6-3.
Up next, Texas Lutheran welcomes the number one team in the country, the rival Trinity Tigers, to Katt-Isbel Field on Tuesday, March 3. First pitch is set for 6 p.m. With the Tigers move to the SAA, the rivalry game will be a non-conference contest for the first time since 2013. The game will be streamed on FloCollege.
