Cortez, Noblett Named SCAC Players of the Week

SEGUIN, Texas -- After helping the Bulldogs earn a pair of wins to open SCAC play last weekend, senior midfielder Natalia Cortez (Edinburg/Robert Vela) and junior defender Lilly Noblett (San Antonio/Warren) of the Texas Lutheran women's soccer team swept the Southern Collegiate Athletic Conference (SCAC) weekly awards, as announced by the league on Monday.

Cortez was tabbed the Offensive Player of the Week, while Noblett was named the Defensive Player of the Week. The honors mark the fifth and sixth honors for the Bulldogs and the second sweep this season. The honor is the first of Noblett's career and second for Cortez this season and of her career.

Hailing from Edinburg, Texas, Cortez scored goals in both matches for the Bulldogs this weekend including an impressive game-winner on a free kick to help TLU earn the 2-0 win over Austin College on Sunday. She added an insurance goal in the 66th minute on Friday giving TLU an impressive 3-0 win to open conference play.

Cortez has now scored in five of the Bulldogs 11 matches this season, with four game-winning goals, ranking second in NCAA Division-III. She sits in third in the SCAC with eight goals this season.

A San Antonio native, Noblett scored an impressive goal to help TLU earn a 2-0 win over Austin College. She scored an unassisted banger to double the Bulldogs lead in the 64th minute. Noblett and the TLU defense limited the 'Roos to just three shots on frame in the match. She played 87 minutes in the win over Austin College.

On Friday, Noblett helped the TLU defense tally its first of two clean sheets on the weekend in a 3-0 win over LeTourneau. The TLU back line held LeTourneau, who entered the contest as the highest-scoring team in the SCAC, to eight shots, including four shots on goal in the match. TLU has held opponents to five shots on goal or less in seven of 11 matches so far this season.

Up next, the Bulldogs wrap their nine-game homestand as they host Concordia (TX) on Friday, Oct. 9 at 7:30 PM. The match will be streamed on FloCollege. All streaming and live stats links will be available on tlubulldogs.com.
