SEGUIN, Texas -- Texas Lutheran (6-3) fell to the rival Southwestern Pirates, 1-0, in a hard fought match Sunday evening at Gustafson Field.
Southwestern (5-2-2) scored the game's only goal in the 52nd minute. TLU outshot the Pirates 15-13 but the the Pirates held a 7-6 advantage in shots on goal.
The two teams held near identical stat lines through the opening 45 minutes as neither team was able to break the 0-0 draw.
Southwestern would chip a loose ball in in the 52nd minute to take the lead.
TLU had a number of chances to equalize in the second half but came up short in a physical contest that saw six cards between the two teams.
Alysa Marquez (Miami, FL/Dr. Michael Krop) finished with six saves in the match.
Up next, the Bulldogs will open SCAC play on Friday, Oct. 2 at 7 PM as they welcome LeTourneau to Gustafson Field in a battle of the top two teams in the SCAC after non-conference play.
