Texas Lutheran Selected as Preseason SCAC Favorites for First Time

SEGUIN, Texas -- The Southern Collegiate Athletic Conference (SCAC) announced the 2025 Women's Soccer Preseason Coaches Poll Tuesday morning. For the first time in program history, the Texas Lutheran women's soccer team tops the preseason poll after receiving nine first place votes and 119 points.

The Bulldogs finished second in the SCAC standings last season before falling in double overtime in the 2024 SCAC Tournament Championship to the Trinity Tigers.

Texas Lutheran returns ten All-SCAC honorees, including four First and Second Team honorees, from a 2024 campaign that sits among the best in program history. In 2024, The Bulldogs set a new program record for conference winning percentage (.800) and fell just one win shy of matching the program record for wins in a season, ending the season 13-6-1 and 8-2 in SCAC play. The Bulldogs will be led by First Team All-SCAC honoree and team captain Jessica Robinson (Cibolo/Steele) as well as a trio of All-SCAC Second Team honorees Klarissa Martinez (Houston/Incarnate Word Academy), Noelani Ajel (Cibolo/Steele), and Natalia Cortez (Edinburg/Robert Vela).

Offensively, TLU returns three of its top four scorers from the 2024 squad as the Bulldogs finished first in the SCAC in goals per game (2.30) and scored in goals scored (46). Second Team All-SCAC performer Klarissa Martinez and Honorable Mention honoree Callie Brame (San Antonio/Churchill), who both finished in the top 10 in the SCAC last year in total points, will lead the charge offensively after combining for 11 goals, 18 assists and 40 total points a season ago.

Leading Texas Lutheran on the sidelines is head coach Kerwin Johnson, who enters his fourth season at the helm of the program. In his first three seasons, Johnson has led the Bulldogs to 33 wins, the most in a three-year stretch since TLU entered the SCAC prior to the 2013 season. The team's 13 wins last year are tied for the most in any season since joining the league.

The 2025 women's soccer season gets underway on Saturday, August 30. Texas Lutheran will face Division-II opponent Sul Ross State in the season opener at Gustafson Field, with kickoff set for 11 a.m.
