SEGUIN, Texas -- The Texas Lutheran women's soccer team put on a dominant performance against NCAA Division-II opponent, Sul Ross State, beating the Lobos 5-0 in front of a rowdy Gustafson Field crowd.
Kristina Cromwell (Spring/Klein Collins) scored twice and dished out an assist in her TLU debut as the Bulldogs poured it on for four goals in the second half to open the 2025 season with a victory. TLU held Sul Ross to four shots on goal and out shot the visitors 23-11 overall.
Cromwell opened the scoring in the 11th minute with her first goal as a Bulldog coming via an assist from
Klarissa Martinez (Houston/Incarnate Word Academy). That would be the lone goal of the half before the Bulldogs scored a quarter of goals in the second half.
Natalia Cortez (Edinburg/Robert Vela) opened the scoring in the second half as she put in a header off a Cromwell corner kick to double the Bulldogs lead. Just over ten minutes later, Cromwell netted her second goal of the afternoon - beating the Lobos keeper one-on-one -Â to record her second career brace. Her second goal was assisted by freshman
Makenzie Ivie (Portland/Gregory-Portland), the first of her career.
Klarissa Martinez converted a penalty kick in the 60th minute to extend the TLU lead to 4-0.
Bella Ruiz (New Braunfels/Canyon) capped the scoring for TLU, finishing off a pass from
Ariana Gomez (San Antonio/Randolph), to score her first goal as a Bulldog after missing all of last season due to injury.
Alysa Marquez (Miami, FL/Dr. Michael Krop) made four saves to pick up the win in goal.
Skylar LeBlanc (League City/Clear Falls) and
Alexis Morrison (Cedar Park/Vista Ridge) also made appearances in-goal for the Bulldogs to complete the shutout victory. TLU also held a 5-0 corner kick advantage. a total of 23 Bulldog players saw time in the match, including seven players making their TLU debuts.
TLU's five-goal victory was the widest margin of victory in a regular season opener for the program since 2006 when the Bulldogs beat Huntingdon (AL) 14-0.
The Bulldogs are back in action on Saturday, Sept. 6 as they travel to Brownwood to face Howard Payne at 1 PM then Edinburg on Sunday to face UT-Rio Grande Valley in an exhibition at 11 AM. All streaming and live stats links will be available on tlubulldogs.com.
