SEGUIN, Texas -- A total of 22 Texas Lutheran earned all-Southern Collegiate Athletic Conference (SCAC) honors today as the league released its post-season all-conference teams today as voted on by the head coaches and SIDs.
Freshman quarterback
Reece Deitrick (Austin/Canyon) highlights the group as he was named SCAC First Year Player of the Year. Deitrick is the third Bulldog to earn the SCAC First Year Player of the Year honor and the first since Jekovan Holmes in 2015.
Deitrick had arguably the best freshman season at the quarterback position since Craig Dailey's freshman campaign in 2000. Deitrick, a 6-1, 205-pound freshman from Austin led one of the most explosive offenses in the country after taking over the Bulldogs' offense. He earned All-SCAC honorable mention honors after completing 55.8 percent of his passes (120-for-215) for 1,905 yards and 18 touchdowns. He added 66 carries for 180 yards and two scores in his first year as the starting signal-caller for the Bulldogs. Deitrick finished fifth nationally in passing yards per completion (15.88) and 25th in yards per attempt (8.86).
Eight Bulldogs earned All-SCAC First Team honors: wide receiver and kick returner
Caleb Camarillo (Gonzales/Southside), offensive guard
Jaxson Eskridge (Combine/Crandall), linebacker
Owen Garcia (Austin/Connally), punter
Vincent Herrera (Houston/Langham Creek), safety
Justin Navarro (Edinburg/Robert Vela), defensive end
Anthony Ortegon (Deer Park/Deer Park), cornerback
Marec Square (Houston/Lamar), and offensive tackle
Ian Wollard (Round Rock/Cedar Ridge). Camarillo, Eskridge, and Wollard repeat as All-SCAC First Team honorees while Camarillo earns his first All-SCAC First Team honor as a kick returner.
Camarillo led the Bulldogs with 729 yards receiving and nine touchdowns and finished second in the nation in yards per catch (27.0 YPC). The 729 receiving yards are the most for a Bulldogs receiver since TLU Hall of Famer Cameron Peavy's 1,029 yard season in 2013. He finishes his career sixth all-time in career receiving yards (1,666).
Jaxson Eskridge and
Ian Wollard were the driving force in a TLU offense that finished in the top 25 nationally in rushing yards per game as the Bulldogs ran for 216.5 yards per game behind the TLU offensive line. Garcia, a two-time SCAC Defensive Player of the Week, led the Bulldogs with 65 tackles while adding two interceptions, two forced fumbles, two fumble recoveries, and two pass breakups. Herrera, despite limited use due to the high powered TLU offense, finished the season with a 39.59 punting average with three punts over 50 yards and seven landing inside the 20-yard line to earn his first All-SCAC honor. Navarro was second on the team in tackles with 60 and had two interceptions and four pass breakups from the safety position. Ortegon led the team with five sacks and eight pressures on the defensive line to earn his first All-SCAC honor. Square led the Bulldogs with four interceptions and had 27 tackles at the corner to earn his second straight All-SCAC honor. Square finishes his career in the top ten in TLU's NCAA history in interceptions, finishing his career with five.
