SAN ANTONIO, Texas -- No. 25 Texas Lutheran scored a run in the ninth but came up just short, 8-6, to No. 15 Trinity on Saturday night at Trinity Baseball Field to drop the series.
The Bulldogs (25-10, 14-3 SCAC) will look to salvage the series against the Tigers on Sunday night at 7 PM. All streaming and live stats links will be available on tlubulldogs.com.
Joe Jimenez (San Antonio/Johnson) finished the game 3-for-5 with a double, a RBI, and a run scored. Randy Huerta (New Braunfels/New Braunfels) went 2-for-4 with a double, two RBI, and a run scored.
Texas Lutheran got on the board first with an RBI double from Randy Huerta in the top of the first. Trinity got the run back in the bottom of the first to bring the game to a 1-1 tie.
Alec Sanchez (Waxahachie/Waxahachie) scored on a balk in the top of the fourth to take the lead before Trinity would tie the game two-all with a solo home run in the bottom of the frame.
The Bulldogs added three more runs in the fifth after RBIs from Huerta, Jimenez, and Tyler Post (San Antonio/Johnson) to take 5-2 lead. Trinity would respond with three runs of their own in the bottom of the inning as the teams went blow for blow matching each other's efforts throughout.
Trinity scored three more runs in the eighth on homers of the two-run and solo variety to take an 8-5 lead entering the ninth inning.
Holden Philippus (San Antonio/San Antonio Christian) would score the last run of the game on a wild pitch, bringing the final score to 8-6.
Reliever Brendan Beard (New Waverly/Coldspring-Oakhurst) held the Tigers to one run on two hits in two and two-thirds innings of work - striking out six batters to keep Texas Lutheran in the game.
