SEGUIN, Texas -- Texas Lutheran sophomore defensive back
Owen Garcia (Austin/Connally) has been named the Southern Collegiate Athletic Conference (SCAC) Defensive Player of the Week, while junior punter
Vincent Herrera (Houston/Langham Creek) has been awarded the SCAC Special Teams Player of the Week following their performances in the 38-35 win over Southwestern last Saturday night at Birkelbach Stadium in Georgetown.
It marks the third time since returning to the SCAC that the Bulldogs have won at least two of the three SCAC weekly honors in the same week.
Garcia recorded a career-high 10 tackles, including nine solo stops, in the win over Southwestern. In the first quarter, Garcia intercepted former TLU Bulldog
Jacob Smith which he returned for 31 yards, setting up a TLU touchdown and in the fourth quarter Garcia would force a fumble. This marks the first career SCAC weekly honor for Garcia.
A native of Austin, Texas, Garcia ranks fifth on the Bulldogs with 13 tackles this season and is one of three different Bulldogs with an interception.
Herrera finished Saturday night with a 40.5 yards per punt average with a long of 47 yards coming on his first punt of the night. While he has not punted enough to qualify for the conference leader board just yet, his 42 yard per punt average would lead the SCAC (9 punts for 378 yards). This is also the first SCAC weekly honor for the Houston native.
Texas Lutheran (1-2) returns to action Saturday, Sept. 27, to face East Texas Baptist at 1 PM at Bulldog Stadium. The game will be broadcast on FloCollege along with KWED 1580 AM with Chris Austin on the call. All streaming and live stats links will be available on tlubulldogs.com.
