TLU Downed by Hardin-Simmons, 1-0

ABILENE, Texas -- A goal just 39 seconds into the match provided the only scoring as Texas Lutheran fell to Hardin-Simmons at HSU Soccer Complex in Abilene.

The Cowgirls (5-1-2) put their first shot of the evening low and to the left of TLU goalkeeper Alysa Marquez (Miami, FL/Dr. Michael Krop) to take the 1-0 advantage.

The goal stood for the rest of the game despite a combined 42 shots between the two teams. Hardin-Simmons out shot the Bulldogs 25-17 but Texas Lutheran maintained a 9-7 advantage in shots on goal but were unable to put one away.

Aliyah Fonseca (Harlingen/Harlingen) and Natalia Cortez (Edinburg/Robert Vela) led the Bulldogs with two shots on goal each.

Marquez finished the match with six saves while the Cowgirls keeper, Abigail Medlin, finished with eight.

The loss was TLU's second consecutive this week by a 1-0 count. Both losses have come against teams that made the 2024 NCAA Tournament.

The Bulldogs (2-2) road trip continues as they travel to San Antonio on Tuesday, Sept. 23, to face the rival Trinity Tigers in their final tune up ahead of SCAC play. Kickoff is set for 7 PM from Paul McGinlay Field with the match being streamed for free on Trinity's Tiger Network on YouTube.
