THOUSAND OAKS, CA -- The Texas Lutheran women's basketball team fell to Cal Lutheran, 70-67, on Saturday night inside Gilbert Arena in a battle between two 2025 NCAA Tournament qualifiers. The loss is the first of the season as Texas Lutheran falls to 3-1 on the year.
Davi'Yanna Jones (San Antonio/Stevens) recorded her second career double-double in just her fourth game back after missing all of last season due to injury, finishing with 22 points and 11 rebounds - both career highs. Callista Perez (San Antonio/Stevens) ended with 14 points and eight rebounds off the bench with 12 points coming in the second half. Sarahi Jones (Los Fresnos/Los Fresnos) finished with 10 points and 11 rebounds for her second double-double of the season.
The Bulldogs started slow - shooting 23.8% and trailing 26-14 after the first period. The Bulldogs controlled the middle part of the game with a 17-point quarter led by seven from Davi'Yanna Jones but would still trail by ten entering halftime. The Bulldogs limited the Regals to ten points in the third and were able to chip away at the lead to trail 51-49 entering the fourth behind seven more points from Jones.
The fourth quarter the Bulldogs offense came alive with their best shooting performance of the night shooting 47 percent from the field and turning the game into a back-and-forth battle down the stretch.
A layup from Callista Perez tied the game 65-all with 3:12 remaining but the TLU comeback attempt would run out of gas, scoring just two points the remaining three minutes.
TLU would have an attempt to tie the game at the buzzer, but would fumble the exchange leading to them not getting a clean look.
The three-point line proved to be the difference as Cal Lutheran would connect on 10-of-35 three-point attempts while TLU would only make 5-of-17. TLU would also shoot below their normal average at the free throw line, converting 14-of-21 attempts at the line.
