Bulldogs Open California Road Trip with Win over Caltech, 68-37

THOUSAND OAKS, CA -- #RV Texas Lutheran women's basketball (3-0) downed Caltech (0-2) Friday, 68-37, at Gilbert Arena on the campus of Cal Lutheran University in their first of three games of their California road trip.

Sophomore Noelani Ajel (Cibolo/Steele), who made her season debut after the conclusion of the women's soccer season that saw her named SCAC Defensive Player of the Year and help lead the Bulldogs to their first SCAC Regular Season championship, scored a career-high 12 points after scoring 12 points over the duration of her entire freshman season. The dual-sport athlete added four rebounds, three assists, and two steals in 17 minutes off the bench. Ajel finished 3-of-4 from beyond the arc and at the free throw line.

Sarahi Jones (Los Fresnos/Los Fresnos) was the only other Bulldog in double-figures, finishing with 11 points and seven rebounds. With her eleven point performance, Jones reached the 500 career points milestone. Freshman Laura Sierra (San Antonio/St. Anthony Catholic) scored a career-high six points, while Maggy Moreman (Skidmore/Skidmore-Tynan), Raemie Medina (Weslaco/Weslaco) and Hannah Gallegos (San Antonio/Harlan) all finished with career-highs in rebounds as Moreman finished with seven and Gallegos and Medina finished with six each.

Texas Lutheran made five of their first six shots and would start the game on a 19-0 run to set the tone for what would turn into a 42-10 run over the course of the first half. TLU limited the Beavers to 5-of-32 shooting and forced 16 turnovers in the first half. The Beavers would score just four points in the second quarter.

The TLU starters started the half but it would be the Bulldogs bench that would carry the Bulldogs for most of the half. Emerald St. Laurent (The Woodlands/Oak Ridge) led TLU with six points in the third quarter as the Bulldogs maintained their 32-point lead entering the fourth quarter. The Bulldogs cruised the rest of the way leading by as many as 37 points and securing the wire-to-wire road win.

TLU would maintain a 65-44 advantage on the glass on Friday. The 65 rebounds were one rebound shy of tying the program record for rebounds in a single-game set against Sul Ross State in 2011 (66).

Next up, Texas Lutheran continues their west coast road trip on Saturday, Nov. 15 as they return to Gilbert Arena to face Cal Lutheran. Tip-off is set for 7 PM CST/ 5 PM PST. The game will be streamed on FloCollege. All streaming and live stats links will be available on tlubulldogs.com.
