SEGUIN, Texas -- Texas Lutheran Volleyball came up short in a five-set thriller to Southwestern, 21-25, 26-24, 25-21, 20-25, 12-15, on Wednesday at Memorial Gymnasium.

The Bulldogs (7-10) had their four-match winning streak snapped despite outhitting the Pirates on the night.

Nadia Dunn (Houston/Pearland) led the way with 13 kills and posted her first career double-double with a career-high 20 digs. Maselina Tuufuli (St. Hedwig/Steele) finished with 12 kills and five blocks while Ryann Ely (Montgomery/Concordia Lutheran) added 11 kills and a career-high five blocks. Briana Salvatierra-Moore (San Antonio/Antonian College Prep) led the match with nine blocks, finishing one shy of her career-high and tying for the sixth most in a match in program history.

Both setters Naomi Gamboa (San Antonio/Warren) and Addison Gallegos (Pleasanton/Jourdanton) finished with double-doubles as Gamboa finished with 24 assists and 13 digs, both career-highs, while Gallegos had a career-high 23 assists and 14 digs.

Southwestern maintained a small lead throughout the first set as the Pirates kept the Bulldogs at bay to win the opening set, 25-21. The Pirates used a 6-1 run late in the set to pull away from TLU.

The Bulldogs were able to use a 5-1 lead to take an early lead. The Pirates managed to chip away at the lead and force extra points before Texas Lutheran picked up a 26-24 win on an ace from Naomi Gamboa. Ely led the way offensively with five kills in the second set.

The Bulldogs jumped out to a big lead in the third and held on for a 25-21 win. 

Southwestern got out to a 15-8 lead and never looked back, winning the set 25-20 to force the decisive fifth set.

The fifth set was back and forth before the Pirates closed the match on a 6-3 run to win the fifth set 15-12.

Texas Lutheran heads back on the road on Friday as they travel to face Concordia (TX) on Friday, Oct. 10 at 5 PM. The match will be broadcast on FloCollege. All streaming and live stats links will be available on tlubulldogs.com.
