SEGUIN, Texas -- Texas Lutheran junior right-hander
Kayla Oliveira tossed the 28th no-hitter in program history to highlight a Saturday doubleheader sweep of Schreiner that finished off a four-game conference series sweep of the Mountaineers.
Fifteenth-ranked TLU posted 8-0 and 9-1 victories, both in five innings, over Schreiner to push the Bulldogs' overall record to 25-7 and the conference mark to 19-1.
Schreiner dropped to 15-21 overall and to 11-9 in the SCAC.
Oliveira (San Diego, Texas/San Diego) recorded her first no-hitter as a Bulldog. The junior college transfer, out of Laredo College, struck out eight Mountaineers and worked around three walks.
Oliveira won both of her starts in the SCAC series against Schreiner. She improved to 10-3 overall and lowered her season ERA to 1.27.
TLU scored two runs in the first, two in the second, two in the fourth, and two in the fifth.ÂÂ
Bianca Cerda (Corona, Calif./Santiago) drove in three runs and went 1-for-3, and
Kelly Jurden (Brenham/Brenham) scored three times and stole two bases.
Kassie Maddox (Midland/Greenwood) and
Chassety Raines (Spring/Klein Collins) each had two hits.
Cassie Roche (Corpus Christi/Gregory-Portland) hit her fourth home run of the season in the early-game win. Roche hit a solo shot to left field.
In the late game, Raines took to the pitching circle and improved to 6-0 overall with five innings of work. She did not allow an earned run. Raines struck out one and did not walk a batter.
Raines helped her own cause by driving in three. She was 2-for-2. Maddox and
DeAnna Hernandez (Sugar Land/Dulles) also went 2-for-2. Cerda collected two hits in three at-bats.
Jurden was 1-for-2 with a run scored and an RBI. She stole another two bases in the late game and moved her season steals total to 41. Jurden is two steals from tying, and three steals from breaking, the single-season steals record of
Kyla Lockley, who set the mark at 43 in 2018.
Jurden, a sophomore, has 70 steals in a little less than two seasons at TLU. The Bulldogs' career record, held by Ashley Jacobsen, sits at 99.
The Bulldogs now head to Shreveport for consecutive weekends of softball action. First, the Bulldogs face off against Centenary College (La.) in a four-game series starting at 6 p.m Thursday with a doubleheader and closing with a 1 p.m. Friday doubleheader.
The Bulldogs return to Shreveport the following weekend for the SCAC Softball Championship, set for April 26-28 at Centenary.
