Bulldogs clinch SCAC Softball regular-season title, tournament's top-seed

SHREVEPORT, La. -- Texas Lutheran Softball clinched its sixth consecutive Southern Collegiate Athletic Conference regular-season championship and secured the top seed in the upcoming SCAC Tournament with 6-2 and 9-1 victories Friday afternoon against Centenary (La.)

TLU and Centenary only played two games of the four-game series. Thursday's doubleheader was canceled due to field and weather conditions. The second doubleheader will not be re-scheduled. Centenary hosts the SCAC Tournament this coming Friday, Saturday and Sunday in Shreveport.

The Bulldogs improved to 27-7 overall and to 21-1 in the SCAC. Centenary dropped to 15-21 overall and to 12-10 in the SCAC.

Bulldog outfielder Kelly Jurden (Brenham/Brenham) set the new single-season steals record for TLU Softball and for the SCAC with three steals in the doubleheader. The record-breaker, her 44th, came in the second game. She had two steals in the early game.

Jurden broke former teammate Kyla Lockley's school record of 43, which Lockley set last year. Lockley shared the SCAC mark with Brooke Sanchez of Trinity, who stole 43 in 2013.

Cassie Roche (Corpus Christi/Gregory-Portland) homered in the first game and drove in three, and Kassie Maddox (Midland/Greenwood) hit a pair of two-run homers in the second game and drove in four.

Maddox was 3-for-3 with three runs scored in the late game. She was 2-for-3 with a run scored in the early contest.

Kayla Oliveira (San Diego, Texas/San Diego) tossed a complete-game four-hitter in the opener. She struck out four and walked one in improving to 11-3 overall.

Chassity Raines (Spring/Klein Collins) moved her pitching record to 7-0 with a complete-game two-hiiter. The game was reduced to six innings because of the run rule. Raines struck out three and did not issue a walk.

TLU, the five-time reigning SCAC champion, starts pursuit of its sixth straight conference title on Friday in Shreveport. The Bulldogs will play the winner of the No. 4 seed v. No. 5 seed contest. The Bulldogs' first game is set for a 4 p.m. start Friday.
