TLU splits doubleheader with Southwestern; SCAC win streak ends at 52

GEORGETOWN, Texas -- Texas Lutheran moved its unbeaten streak in Southern Collegiate Athletic Conference regular-season games to a record 52 victories with a 12-1 win against Southwestern in the early contest Saturday.

But the streak came to a halt in the late game with a 6-5 Southwestern victory. TLU had not lost a conference game in the SCAC since April 2, 2016, when Southwestern recorded a 7-5 win in Georgetown.

The doubleheader split Saturday still gave TLU a 3-1 edge in the four-game series with the Pirates. TLU now stands at 6-4 overall and at 3-1 in the SCAC.

Southwestern is 7-3 overall and 1-3 in the SCAC.

In game one, the Bulldogs won in five innings behind home runs from Haley Padilla (Spring Branch/Smithson Valley) and Cassie Roche (Corpus Christi/Gregory-Portland) and from a 4-for-4 performance at the plate from Kelly Jurden (Brenham/Brenham).

Roche hit a solo home run in the second inning, and Padilla belted a three-run shot in the fifth. TLU scored seven runs in the fifth.

Kelsie Stone tossed four innings in the first game to pick up the win. She did not allow an earned run.

In game two, Southwestern stopped TLU's 52-game win streak by holding off the Bulldogs in the seventh. TLU trailed 6-4 entering the inning and pulled within a run on a Padilla RBI triple with two outs. The game would end with Padilla standing at third with the tying run.

Roche hit a three-run home run in the second inning to give TLU a quick 3-0 lead.

The Bulldogs return to this Friday and Saturday with a four-game home conference series with the University of Dallas. Friday's doubleheader starts at 5 p.m., and Saturday's doubleheader starts at noon.
