Texas Lutheran hands East Texas Baptist first loss of season

SEGUIN, Texas -- Texas Lutheran handed sixth-ranked East Texas Baptist its first loss of the season as the Bulldogs and the Tigers split a non-conference doubleheader Saturday at TLU's Ed Kruse Stadium (Morck Softball Field).

TLU run-ruled ETBU in the second game, a 9-1 victory in six innings for the Bulldogs.

ETBU took the opener 1-0.

The doubleheader pitted the two perennial NCAA Division III playoff teams against each other. TLU eliminated ETBU from the Seguin, Texas regional a year ago.

TLU's record this year now stands at 13-5 overall. ETBU's overall record is 20-1.

In the Bulldogs' victory, freshman second baseman Casey Martin (Pearland/Pearland) collected two hits, including a triple, and drove in three runs.

Martin had an RBI triple in the third and a two-run single in the sixth.

Madisyn Cates (Baytown/Sterling) ended the game in the fifth with an RBI single that scored Kelly Jurden (Brenham/Brenham). Cates went 2-for-4 and had a pair of RBI.

Chassety Raines (Spring/Klein Collins) made the most of her first career start and first career varsity appearance. Raines (1-0) scattered six hits and allowed just one run. She did not walk a batter.

In the early game, ETBU freshman Beatriz Lara tossed a four-hit shutout against the Bulldogs and improved to 12-0. Lara worked around four walks.

ETBU scored the lone run of the first game in the top of the seventh on a MacKenzie Anderson RBI bunt single.

Kayla Oliveira started for TLU and went six shutout innings. She allowed five hits and no runs and walked three. She picked up two strikeouts.

TLU returns to Southern Collegiate Athletic Conference play next Friday and Saturday with road doubleheaders against Trinity.
