SEGUIN, Texas -- The Texas Lutheran Bulldogs broke their own Southern Collegiate Athletic Conference record for consecutive conference wins by grabbing 4-3 and 7-1 victories Friday over Southwestern.
The Bulldogs improved to 5-3 overall and to 2-0 in the SCAC. Southwestern dropped to 6-2 and to 0-2 in the SCAC.
TLU has now won 51 consecutive games in SCAC play. The Bulldogs have not lost a conference game since April 2, 2016, when Southwestern knocked off the Bulldogs 7-5 in Georgetown, Texas.
The Pirates nearly ended the Bulldogs' streak at 49 by taking a one-run lead into the seventh inning of game one.
TLU rallied in the seventh with a
Chassety Raines (Spring/Klein Collins) single to tie the game and a
Bethany Nevlud (Shiner/Shiner) single to win the game. Nevlud collected the walk-off hit - a well-struck fly ball to center that sailed over the center fielder's head to score
Kassie Maddox (Midland/Greenwood) from third.
Jordaine Bishop (Leander/Rouse) picked up the win in relief.
Kelsie Stone (Helotes/O'Connor) tossed 5-2-3 innings and allowed just one earned run.
In game two, TLU erupted for six runs in the second inning.
Madisyn Cates (Baytown/Sterling) belted a grand slam to right-center to break the game open.
TLU took advantage of a single, three walks, and a hit batter leading up to the Cates home run.
Kelly Jurden (Brenham/Brenham) and
Rebecca Snow (Tomball/Klein Oak) each drove in a run with bases-loaded walks.
Jurden walked four times and scored a run in the late game, and she went 3-for-4 with a run scored in the early game.
TLU right-hander
Kayla Oliveira (San Diego, Texas/San Diego) went the distance in the second game. She struck out eight, walked two, and allowed one earned run. Oliveira improved to 1-1.
The Bulldogs and Pirates are scheduled to play a 1 p.m. doubleheader Saturday in Georgetown as part of the SCAC slate.
