Baseball starts 2019 season with 9-5 win over Mary Hardin-Baylor

GRAND PRAIRIE, Texas -- Texas Lutheran overcame a quick 2-0 deficit to post a 9-5 win Friday night over the University of Mary Hardin-Baylor at the Rusty Greer / Jackie Moore Classic at AirHogs Stadium.

TLU (1-0) received 5-1/3 innings of two-hit baseball from senior right-hander Drew Waller (Bellville/Bellville). Fellow senior Cody Rimko (Lewisville/Lewisville) tossed the final 3-2/3 innings and picked up the save.

UMHB dropped to 0-1.

Waller struck out six and walked three. He did not allow an earned run.

TLU, the 2018 national runner-up in NCAA Division III, received key contributions Friday from several players that did not factor into last season's playoff run.

For example, redshirt sophomore Cullen Motsinger (Houston/Cypress Ranch) started in center field and had the same number of hits (4) against UMHB as he had total at-bats in 2018.

Motsinger went 4-for-4 with two runs scored and an RBI. He reached base five times with the four hits and a walk.

New starting second baseman Austin Colon (La Grange/La Grange) contributed two hits and two runs scored, and new third baseman Nick Gardoni (Salinas, Calif./Palma) went 2-for-4 with an RBI.

Starting designated hitter Wyatt Ward (San Marcos/San Marcos) reached base four times. Ward went 1-for-2 with an RBI, and he walked twice and was hit by a pitch.

Senior first baseman Chad Curtis (Wolfforth/Frenship) had three hits and a double, and senior shortstop Thomas Varner (Austin/Bowie) registered two hits and two runs.

The Bulldogs racked up 17 hits and walked five times.

TLU continues play Saturday at AirHogs Stadium with a 2:30 p.m. contest against Hendrix College.
