GRAND PRAIRIE, Texas -- Texas Lutheran completed a 3-0 run through the Rusty Greer/Jackie Moore Classic with a 14-3 victory Sunday over Linfield (Ore.).
TLU, out of the Southern Collegiate Athletic Conference, moved to 3-0 on the season. Linfield, a member of the Northwest Conference dropped to 0-3.
The Bulldogs took full advantage of Linfield pitching that struggled to find the strike zone. The Wildcats walked 15, hit four, and issued a balk.
TLU managed just three hits but didn't need more hits to score 14 runs against Linfield.
The Bulldogs had six players with at least two walks.
Austin Colon (La Grange/La Grange) walked twice, had two steals, drove in two, and was hit by a pitch.
Tyler Cauley (Mont Belvieu/Barbers Hill) tripled, scored three runs and walked twice.
Cullen Motsinger (Houston/Cypress Ranch),
Wyatt Ward (San Marcos/San Marcos),
Spencer Brandt (Yoakum/Yoakum), and
Nick Gardoni (Salinas, Calif./Palma) each scored twice.
Trey Albaugh (Tomball/Concordia Lutheran) delivered a two-RBI single in the second inning to put TLU up 2-0. Albaugh drove in three.
Bulldog freshman left-hander
Riley Backs (Cypress/Cypress Falls) made his collegiate debut and went four innings. He allowed six hits, struck out three, and walked one. He allowed three earned runs.
Cody Rimko (Lewisville/Lewisville) picked up the win in relief. Rimko (1-0) tossed a scoreless inning of relief and struck out two.
Matthew Hickey (Houston/Klein Collins) hurled two shutout innings in relief.
The game was called after seven innings.
The Bulldogs, ranked as high as No. 3 among the NCAA Division III preseason polls, return to Seguin for next weekend's three-game series with Hardin-Simmons. The series starts with a 7 p.m. contest Friday at TLU's Katt-Isbel Field and concludes with a 1 p.m. doubleheader Saturday, also at Katt-Isbel.
