Bulldogs collect key conference win over Trinity, knock Tigers out of first

SEGUIN, Texas -- Texas Lutheran Women's Basketball grabbed a key 70-66 home win over area rival Trinity and knocked the Tigers out of the co-lead in the Southern Collegiate Athletic Conference, Saturday afternoon in TLU's Memorial Gymnasium (Jim Shuler Court).

TLU (12-7, 8-2 SCAC) pulled even with Trinity (15-4, 8-2 SCAC) in the conference standings. The Bulldogs now sit a half-game behind Austin College (15-3, 8-1 SCAC).

The Bulldogs led the entire game and withstood a furious second-half rally from the Tigers. TLU had a 20-point lead late in the second quarter and took a 40-26 lead into halftime. The Bulldogs had a 16-point lead with 9:34 to play in the game.

TLU redshirt sophomore Tara Molina (San Antonio/Johnson) posted her first career triple-double. The 5-foot-2 point guard scored 13, grabbed 12 rebounds and dished out 10 assists. She also collected three steals.

Molina was joined in double figures by backcourt mate Dominique Campos (Laredo/Alexander), who scored 14 and had a key jumper at the 1:36 mark that pushed TLU's lead back to five. Campos also pulled down five rebounds.

Bulldog post Abby Hroch (Port Lavaca/Calhoun) added 13 points and four rebounds. Freshman forward Morgan Rodriguez (New Braunfels/Canyon) chipped in nine points, two rebounds and two assists. Anna Koenig (Fredericksburg/Fredericksburg) and Bryanna Delgado (Port Lavaca/Calhoun) each scored eight.

Rodriguez's layup with 50 seconds remaining gave TLU a five-point lead.

Abby Holland's three-pointer with 19 seconds left pulled the Tigers within two.

After a Rodriguez free throw gave TLU a three-point advantage with 17 seconds to play, the Tigers had a three-point shot by Emily Daniel rim out with seven seconds to play.

Campos hit one of two free throws in the closing seconds to make the final margin four.

Holland led Trinity with 21 points. Daniel added 17 and nine rebounds.

Despite shooting 32 percent for the game, Trinity made the game interesting by taking advantage of 23 TLU turnovers and by grabbing 18 offensive rebounds.

TLU shot 58 percent for the game and 50 percent from the three-point line, but Trinity took 25 more shots and had four more made free throws.

The Bulldogs held Trinity to 4-of-19 (21.1 percent) in the second quarter and to 9-of-33 (27.3 percent) from the arc for the game.

TLU heads to Colorado next weekend for a conference game in Denver against Johnson & Wales and a game in Colorado Springs against Colorado College.
