TLU Baseball splits Sunday doubleheader with Southwestern


GEORGETOWN, Texas -- Texas Lutheran split a Sunday road doubleheader with Southwestern University and secured a 2-1 Southern Collegiate Athletic Conference series win.

TLU won the first game Saturday 7-4,and SU took game two 6-4. The Bulldogs posted an 8-4 win over the Pirates in Friday's series opener. All three games were played at SU's Rockwell Baseball Field.

The Bulldogs sit in third place in the SCAC Baseball standings. The Bulldogs are 28-9 overall and 10-5 in the SCAC.


SU currently sits in fifth place in conference standings. The Pirates are 22-13 overall and 13-2 in conference.

Centenary is tied for first with No.1 Trinity University in the SCAC regular-season title race.

The Bulldogs registered 13 hits in the early game, and five different Bulldog starters registered at least two hits. Tyler Cauley (Baytown/Barbers Hill) and Keaton Boysen (Scottsdale, Ariz./Gateway CC) each produced three hits and scored a run in the TLU win. Cauley added two doubles and two RBI. 

Shortstop Eric Rabinowitz (Schertz/Clemens) and first baseman Chad Curtis (Wolfforth/Midland JC) each had two hits and drove in runs for the Bulldogs. Curtis finished 2-for-5 with a double, one RBI and a run scored. Rabinowitz drove in two runs, and Spencer Brandt (Yoakum/Yoakum) scored two times. 

Nathan Malinovsky tossed a complete game for his ninth win of the season. Malinovsky (9-1) allowed five hits, struck out eight and walked three.

In the late game, the Pirates started off strong with two-RBI singles from Byron Dowdell and Ethan Hallmark to take an early 2-0 lead in the first. TLU responded in the second with an RBI-double from freshmen Cole Irby (Buda/Hays) to cut the lead down to one. 

SU's Daniel Montgomery Jr. kicked off a two-run inning for the Pirates in the fourth with a single through the right side, and Seth Sparks produced a sacrifice fly to right field to bring in the second run. SU produced another two-run inning in the fifth to take a 6-2 lead.

The Bulldogs battled back in the eighth and ninth, scoring one run in each. In the eighth, TLU plated a run off a sacrifice fly to right field from Thomas Varner (Austin/Bowie). In the ninth, the Pirates produced their only fielding error of the game allowing David Vatuna (Cypress/Cy-Fair) to score for TLU, unearned. 

Austin Smith earned the win for the Pirates with 8-1/3 innings of work. Montgomery Jr. tossed the final 2/3 of the game and claimed his first save of the season. 

Clint Johns (Orland, Calif./Orland) (4-2) took the loss for TLU. Johns scattered eight hits and struck out four. Zach Perry (Round Rock/Round Rock) threw 1-1/3 innings of relief and struck out one. 

Dylan Murrell (Tomball/Memorial) tossed the final 3-1/3 of the game. He allowed just one hit and struck out five. 

TLU heads to Sherman, Texas for their last conference series with Austin College. The three-game series opens with a 7 p.m. game Friday evening, and will finish with a 1 p.m. doubleheader on Saturday.
