SEGUIN, Texas -- Texas Lutheran fell 6-5 to Schreiner University on Friday night in the Southern Collegiate Athletic Conference-opener at TLU's Katt-Isbel Field.

SU improved to 10-11 overall and 1-0 in conference. TLU dropped to 15-4 and is 0-1 in SCAC play.

The Bulldogs held a 5-3 lead over the Mountaineers at the bottom of the eighth. Two TLU errors in the top of the ninth allowed SU to score three unearned runs, and pull out their first conference win of the season. 

TLU had the tying run at second and the winning run at first in the ninth. The Mountaineers shut the door on the TLU comeback with two straight shot fly balls to right and center field to end the game. 

Payton Stanford picked up the save, his eighth of the year, and preserved the win for Robert Baker, his first of the season. 

Drew Waller (3-1) took the loss for TLU. Dylan Drgac started for TLU and went six and 2/3 innings. He struck out six, walked two and allowed two earned runs.

Tyler Cauley opened scoring for the Bulldogs with a solo home run to left center. Cauley finished with two hits, two RBI and one run scored. 

Thomas Varner had two hits for the Bulldogs. He also drove in a run. Ben Marvin went 2-for-4 and plated a run for the Bulldogs.

TLU and the Mountaineers return to conference play in the SCAC tomorrow with a 1 p.m. doubleheader at Katt-Isbel Field.
