Josephs steal, layup in closing seconds sends TLU past Centenary 77-75

SEGUIN, Texas -- Texas Lutheran point guard Nathan Josephs (San Antonio/Clark) stole the ball and dribbled three-quarters the length of the court to score a final-second lay-up that pushed the Bulldogs past Centenary College (La.) 77-75 Friday night.

In TLU's Memorial Gymnasium (Jim Shuler Court), Josephs and the Bulldogs kept their Southern Collegiate Athletic Conference tournament hopes alive with the victory.

TLU, the three-time defending SCAC champion, improved to 9-14 overall and to 5-7 in conference play. Centenary, already assured of a conference-tournament berth, dropped to 13-9 overall and to 7-5 in the SCAC. The Bulldogs and Gents split the two regular-season meetings.

TLU trailed by as many as eight points in the second half and by seven with 2:07 remaining in the game.

The Centenary lead was five with 34 seconds to play before Bulldog freshman guard Sebastian Andrade (El Paso/Americas) erupted for 10 points (two three-pointers and two jumpers) in a span of 24 seconds.

Andrade's second three of the streak brought TLU within one. After Centenary went 1-for-2 at the line, Andrade scored his ninth and 10th points of the spurt to tie the game at 75 with 10 seconds remaining.

Centenary quickly brought the ball up the right sideline, looking for a last-second, game-winning shot. Josephs stripped the ball from the Gents and sprinted up the floor. He scored on a contested lay-up on the left side of the goal. The buzzer sounded, and a TLU celebration on the court ensued.

The officials eventually put 0.2 seconds on the clock. Centenary threw the ball to midcourt, where Travion Kirkendoll heaved a desperation three. The shot did not go in, and the attempts appeared to be after the buzzer.

Andrade scored 19 of his team-high 26 points in the second half. He also pulled down a team-high six rebounds. Bulldog teammate Shawn Hamilton also had six.

Josephs contributed 17 points (14 in the second half). He also dished out six assists.

Kirkendoll led the Gents with 32 points. He also had five rebounds and two steals. Cedric Harris and Kaharri Carter scored 16 and 11, respectively.

TLU remains in a tie with Southwestern for the sixth and final conference tournament spot. (The top six teams in the SCAC qualify for the conference tournament, to be played this year at Colorado College in Colorado Springs, Colo.).

With two games to play (including a head-to-head meeting on Feb. 16 at Southwestern), the Bulldogs and Pirates each hold 5-7 conference records. TLU and Southwestern also are one game Colorado College, at 6-6.

The Bulldogs play their final home game of 2017-18 at 4 p.m. tomorrow (Saturday) against Austin College. It will be Senior Day, and the Bulldogs will honor their three seniors - Matthew Gillette, Matt Perry and Elijah Sobers.
