SEGUIN, Texas-- The Texas Lutheran Bulldogs opened their 2018 baseball campaign with 5-0 and 13-12 wins over Pacific Lutheran University Sunday afternoon.
The Bulldogs advanced to 2-0 overall and the Lutes dropped to 1-3 overall.
At TLU's Katt-Isbel Field, senior
Dylan Drgac (Caldwell/Caldwell) and
Ethan Mueller (Converse/Judson) picked up pitching wins, and
Nathan Malinovsky (New Braunfels/New Braunfels) saved game one with two innings of relief. Malinosky struck out two.
Senior
Matthew Lemon (Caldwell/Caldwell) and redshirt-sophomore
Spencer Brandt (Yoakum/Yoakum) each hit solo home runs in the opener.
Designated hitter
Taylor Sammons (Houston/Clear Creek) singled to center field, bringing home Lemon and
Thomas Varner (Austin/Bowie) for the Bulldogs.
Eric Rabinowitz (Schertz/Clemens) brought in the last run of the game with a shot down the left field line.
In game two, RBIs from
Cameron Wilson (Katy/Morton Ranch),
Ben Marvin (Kingwood/Kingwood) and
Riley Schaefer (Thorndale/Thorndale) in the fourth, and a Rabinowitz two-run shot allowed the Bulldogs to erase a 6-0 deficit, trailing only 6-5 going into the sixth inning.
Lemon singled to right field for an RBI, and
Trey Albaugh (Tomball/Alvin CC) brought in two more runs with another shot to right field. TLU led 9-6 in the bottom of the sixth.
The Lutes tied up the game in the eighth inning as Cole Johnson doubled with a shot to right field, notching a pair of RBI. Tori Doten and Jacob Bockelie scored unearned runs in the ninth and gave PLU a 12-10 lead.
A sacrifice bunt by sophomore
Austin Colon (La Grange/La Grange) resulted in a throwing error, allowing the Bulldogs to bring in two runs. Colon scored the winning run for TLU with a shot to left center from Schaefer.ÂÂ
The Bulldogs collected 12 hits in game two and five hits in game one.
Next, TLU is off to Grand Prairie, Texas for the Rusty Greer/Jackie Moore Classic. The Bulldogs' first game is Friday against Willamette University at 2:30 p.m. in Airhogs Stadium.
