SEGUIN, Texas -- Schreiner University kept its hold on the Southern Collegiate Athletic Conference lead and won its eighth straight with an 83-81 home win over Texas Lutheran, Saturday afternoon in SU's Stephens Family Arena.
Schreiner improved to 12-9 overall and to 9-1 in the SCAC.
TLU fell to 8-14 overall and to 4-7 in the SCAC.
Schreiner swept both ends of the regular-season, home-and-home series with the Bulldogs.
The Bulldogs put four players into double figures against the Mountaineers.
Nathan Josephs led TLU with 18. The junior point guard added four assists and four rebounds.
Sebastian Andrade and
Jacob Kouremetis each scored 13, and
Shawn Hamilton pitched in 10 points and six rebounds off the TLU bench.
The Bulldogs trailed eight, 42-34 at the half, despite shooting 48.1 percent from the field.
TLU out-scored Schreiner 47-41 in the second half, and the game was close into the final seconds, with TLU often trailing by less than four points in the closing possessions.
TLU's overall shooting trailed off in the second half, but the Bulldogs found success at the three-point line. TLU hit eight three-pointers out of 17 attempts from the arc in the second half.
Keenan Gumbs led Schreiner with 31 points. He made 10 of his 11 shots and 10 of his 13 free throw attempts. Gumbs also grabbed 11 rebounds.
TLU returns home for next weekend's games against Centenary (La.) and Austin College.
