SEGUIN, Texas -- Sixteenth-ranked University of Texas at Tyler completed a three-game series sweep of Texas Lutheran with 4-1 and 7-6 victories Saturday at TLU's Katt-Isbel Field.
Max Page tossed a complete-game, three-hitter for the Patriots in the opener, and Jared Pauley's RBI groundout in the ninth proved to be the game-winner in the late contest.
UT Tyler improved to 7-3 overall. TLU dropped to 9-3. The Patriots started the series Friday with an 11-4 win over the Bulldogs at Katt-Isbel.
TLU rallied late in Saturday's second contest. Trailing 6-2 in the eighth, the Bulldogs received an RBI double from
Thomas Varner, an RBI single from
Tyler Cauley, and a game-tying, two-run home run from
Chad Curtis.
In the top of the ninth, UT Tyler loaded the bases on three straight hits. Pauley brought home the winning run with a ground ball to first.
Sam Sitton (2-0) notched the win for the Patriots in the late game, and Graham Welch stranded a pair of Bulldogs in the ninth to get his second save of the year.
Page (1-1) struck out eight in the 4-1 win. He walked one and surrendered just three singles.
Eric Rabinowitz had the lone RBI for TLU in the early game.
Nathan Malinovsky started the first game Saturday and did not allow an earned run in six innings. The Bulldogs made three errors in the Patriots' four-run second inning.
The second inning was the big inning for the Patriots all series. In the second innings, UT Tyler scored three runs on Friday, four runs in the first game Saturday, and three runs in the second game Saturday.
The Bulldogs continue their non-conference schedule next Friday and Saturday with a three-game home series with McMurry University.
