SEGUIN, Texas -- Texas Lutheran suffered its first loss of the season in an 11-4 home defeat Friday to No. 16 University of Texas at Tyler.
At TLU's Katt-Isbel Field, the Patriots (5-3) scored three runs in the second and broke the game open with a run in the seventh and five runs in the eighth.
TLU dropped to 9-1 overall with the non-conference loss. The Bulldogs' 9-0 start to the season was the program's best since 2007.
UT Tyler's Alex Bishop drove in three, and Blake Wilson added three hits and two RBI. Bowie Farris registered three hits and also drove in three.
Patriots' starter Ryan Cheatham (1-1) went seven shutout innings, struck out four and walked two. He allowed just three hits.
TLU rallied for four runs in the ninth.
Tyler Cauley had an RBI double, and
Trey Albaugh,
Eric Rabinowitz and
Cameron Wilson each delivered RBI.
Riley Schaefer was the only Bulldog with multiple hits. Schaefer, the senior center fielder, went 2-for-5.
TLU and UT Tyler continue the non-conference series Saturday with a 1 p.m. doubleheader at Katt-Isbel Field.
