SEGUIN, Texas -- Texas Lutheran senior right-hander
Maitlin Raycroft (Spring/Klein) tossed her ninth no-hitter in 24 career starts with the Bulldogs to lead TLU to a doubleheader sweep of Huston-Tillotson Saturday afternoon.
TLU won the first game 7-0 behind Raycroft's pitching dominance. Raycroft (1-0) struck out 16 and walked just one.
In game two, TLU received another shutout pitching performance - this one from junior
Kassie Maddox (Midland/Greenwood). In the 5-0 win, Maddox allowed just four hits and struck out four. She did not walk a batter.
TLU improved to 2-0 overall. HTU fell to 2-2.
Raycroft hurled eight no-hitters a year ago and was an NFCA All-American and a national player of the year finalist. This year, she is a preseason All-American and once again on the NFCA Player of the Year watch list.
Maddox helped Raycroft's cause in the first game with a two-run home run in the Bulldogs' six-run fifth inning.
Maddox, starting at third base in the opener, went 3-for-4 with a run and three RBI.
Kyla Lockley (Wharton/Boling) also had three hits iin the first game.
McKay Bloxham (Katy/Katy) doubled and had a pair of steals.
In game two, Bloxham and
Kelly Jurden (Brenham/Brenham) each had three steals, a run scored and an RBI.
Cassie Roche (Corpus Christi/Gregory-Portland) had two hits and a run scored.
TLU has some time off the playing field before heading west to the NFCA Leadoff Classic in Tucson, Ariz. TLU will play six games in Tucson from March 2-4. Among the teams TLU will face are No. 1-ranked and defending national champion Virginia Wesleyan and No. 2-ranked and national runner-up St. John Fisher.
