TLU opens NFCA Leadoff Classic with wins over No. 2 St. John Fisher, Coe

TUCSON, Ariz. -- Ninth-ranked Texas Lutheran started the National Fastpitch Coaches Association's Leadoff Classic on Friday with a 4-3 win over No. 2-ranked St. John Fisher (N.Y.) and a 5-4 victory over unranked Coe (Iowa).

TLU improved to 4-0 on the season.

Bulldog second baseman Madisyn Cates (Baytown/Sterling) hit a solo home run off 2017 First Team All-American Lindsay Thayer in the sixth to break a 3-3 tie, and Kassie Maddox (Midland/Greenwood) closed out the game with a game-ending 1-6-3 double play.

Haley Padilla (Spring Branch/Smithson Valley) knocked in a run against St. John Fisher, and TLU took advantage of two Cardinals throwing errors.

Maddox notched the save in relief of TLU starter Maitlin Raycroft (Spring/Klein). Raycroft, a 2017 Second Team All-American, struck out 11 in six innings of work. She allowed three runs (no runs earned).

Raycroft picked up two wins on the day. She appeared in relief against Coe. The right-hander gave up a three-run home run in the seventh, but she worked out of a bases-loaded jam to leave the game tied at 4-4.

In the Bulldogs' seventh, Kelly Jurden started the frame with a single and advanced to second on a wild pitch. With one out and Jurden at second, McKay Bloxham (Katy/Katy) doubled to the fence in left-center to drive home Jurden for the walk-off victory.

Bloxham went 3-for-4 with a run scored and an RBI. Kelsie McEachern (Atascocita/Huffman), and Padilla hit a solo home run to center field. Cates and Skylar Ouellette (Corpus Christi/Gregory-Portland) also drove in runs.
