CONWAY, Ark. -- Jayla King's offensive rebound and jumper in the closing seconds of regulation lifted the Hendrix College Warriors to a 57-56 home win over Texas Lutheran on Sunday afternoon.
At the Hendrix College Warrior Classic, Hendrix trailed by two with five seconds to play after TLU's
Abby Hroch (Port Lavaca/Calhoun) broke a 54-54 tie with a layup.
A TLU foul sent Hendrix's Vinessa Daniel to the line with three seconds remaining. Daniel hit the first free throw and missed the second, but King grabbed the offensive rebound and hit the game-winner.
TLU fell to 4-5 with the non-conference loss. Hendrix improved to 5-2.
The Bulldogs went 0-2 in the Warrior Classic with close losses to Rhodes (Tenn.) and Hendrix. Hendrix went 2-0 with wins over Southwestern and TLU.
TLU trailed by as many as nine in the second quarter and had its largest lead, two, with five seconds to play.
Hroch led TLU with 16 points, five rebounds, a block, and an assist. The sophomore forward made six of her 10 shot attempts and went 4-for-6 at the line.
Madison Ray (Port Aransas/Port Aransas) added seven points off the TLU bench, and three players -
Bryanna Delgado (Port Lavaca/Calhoun),
Jenesis Navarro (San Antonio/Lee) and
Kasey Hairell (Hallettsville/Hallettsville) - each scored six.
Hairell led the Bulldogs with seven rebounds. Delgado added six boards.
Daniel scored 15 to lead the Warriors. She also collected nine rebounds and dished out six assists.
Amber Turner and Kessie Jenkins each scored nine for Hendrix.
TLU hit 35 percent of its shot attempts and went 3-for-16 (18.8 percent) from the three-point line. Hendrix shot 31.7 percent overall and 5-for-32 (15.6 percent) from the three-point line.
TLU does not play again until Friday, Dec. 14 when the team opens Southern Collegiate Athletic Conference play with its first-ever meeting with Johnson & Wales (Colo.). Tip-off is set for 5:30 p.m. in TLU's Memorial Gymnasium (Jim Shuler Court).
