SEGUIN, Texas -- The University of Texas at Tyler held the Texas Lutheran Bulldogs to 30.3 percent shooting for the game and secured a 66-56 non-conference road win Wednesday evening in TLU's Memorial Gymnasium.
UT Tyler, in transition from NCAA Division III to NCAA Division II, improved to 2-3 overall. TLU dropped to 4-3 overall.
Carissa Spiker paced the Patriots with 27 points. She hit 10 of her 16 shot attempts and went 3-for-5 from the three-point line. Spiker added four rebounds, three assists and one steal.
No other Patriot hit double figures, but Tyreesha Blaylock added nine and pulled down seven rebounds.
While holding TLU to 30 percent from the floor, UT Tyler made 45.8 percent of its total shots and went 17-for-21 at the free throw line.
TLU freshman guard
Jenesis Navarro (San Antonio/Lee) made four three-pointers and scored a career-high 16. Off the bench, Navarro was 6-for-8 from the field and also contributed four rebounds.
Bryanna Delgado (Port Lavaca/Calhoun) was the only other Bulldog in double figures. Delgado scored 13 and added seven rebounds.
TLU shot 32 three-pointers and made nine.
Tara Molina (San Antonio/Johnson) dished out four assists for TLU. She also chipped in three steals.
Abby Hroch (Port Lavaca/Calhoun) pulled down eight rebounds and scored five points.
Anna Koenig (Fredericksburg/Fredericksburg) recorded seven points and six rebounds.
The non-conference game was a match-up of two former teams from the American Southwest Conference. UT Tyler still plays in the ASC, but the Patriots are in the process of leaving the league. TLU is a member of the Southern Collegiate Athletic Conference in all sports but football. (The Bulldogs are in the ASC for football.)
TLU next heads to Conway, Ark. for a tournament at Hendrix College. The Bulldogs open play with a 3 p.m. game Saturday against Rhodes College (Tenn.). The Bulldogs play the host school Hendrix at noon on Sunday.
