SEGUIN -- Hardin-Simmons withstood a fourth-quarter surge from the Texas Lutheran Bulldogs to secure a 63-57 road win Saturday in TLU's Memorial Gymnasium.
HSU moved to 5-0 overall with the non-conference win. TLU fell to 3-2 overall.
TLU closed within a point with 1:16 to play and had a chance to tie with one free throw remaining. The Bulldogs missed the free throw, and the Cowgirls extended the lead back to six with two free throws and a Ryan Bush three-pointer in the final minute.
Bush came off the Cowgirls' bench to hit four three-pointers. She finished with 12 points, five rebounds and four assists.
Keilee Burke also had 12 for HSU. Taylor Gaffney and Maria Fernandez each scored 10. A'breanna Harrison collected eight rebounds and scored eight.
TLU received 14 points, seven rebounds and three steals from senior guard
Cami Davis (Marion/Marion). With five minutes to play in the game, Davis drove to the basket and drew contact. She went to the floor on a no-call and had to be helped off the floor. She did not return to the game.
Morgan Rodriguez (New Braunfels/New Braunfels) chipped in 13 for the Bulldogs. Rodriguez scored all 13 in the first half. She was 5-for-6 from the floor.
Kasey Hairell (Hallettsville/Hallettsville) grabbed a team-best eight rebounds. She added six points.
TLU trailed 40-33 at the half after shooting 46.7 percent from the floor. The Bulldogs shot just 27 percent in the second half and yet pulled within one after falling behind by as many as 11 in the fourth quarter.
The Bulldogs held HSU to 23.33 percent shooting in the second half.
TLU was 3-of-19 from the three-point line for the game.
TLU returns to action at 3 p.m. Sunday with a non-conference game against Concordia Texas. That contest will also take place in Memorial Gymnasium (Jim Shuler Court).
