Mariela Candelario (San Antonio/Brandeis) scored in the 55th minute to lift the Texas Lutheran Bulldogs to a 1-0 Southern Collegiate Athletic Conference victory over Johnson & Wales (Colo.).ÂÂ
At TLU's Gustafson Field, Candelario knocked in the game-winning shot at the 55:42 mark. Candelario's corner kick struck the right side post, ricocheting to the lower right corner of the goal.ÂÂ
The Bulldogs kept pressure on JWU's keeper Katelyn Peters most of the match. Peters made 10 saves for the Wildcats.ÂÂ
Four Bulldogs registered two shots on goal. The squad was led in shots by
Jaclyn Smolik (Katy/Katy) with six.
Raquel Morris (San Antonio/Johnson) followed closely with five total shots.ÂÂ
TLU led in shots on goal 11-3 and in total shots 30-7. Bulldog keeper
Stephanie Barrientos (Mission/Sharyland Pioneer) made three saves to preserve the shutout and the win.ÂÂ
The Bulldogs improved to 6-5-1 overall and to 5-4 in the SCAC. JWU dropped to 6-6 on the year and to 5-5 in conference play.ÂÂ
TLU's next match is set for 5 p.m. Tuesday at TLU's Gustafson Field against Southwestern University. The Bulldogs will host the Pirates "unofficially" for the second time this season.
