SEGUIN, Texas -- In the final game of a three-game conference series, Texas Lutheran rallied for two runs in the bottom of the 10th to collect a 7-6 win over Southwestern that secured the No. 2 seed for the Bulldogs in next weekend's Southern Collegiate Athletic Conference Baseball Championship.
After dropping the first two games of the series - 8-1 on Friday night and 11-8 earlier in the day Saturday - TLU needed the final-game win over Southwestern to tie Trinity at 12-6 in the SCAC regular-season standings.
TLU swept the regular-season series with Trinity, so the Bulldogs grabbed the No. 2 seed by virtue of the tiebreaker over the Tigers.
TLU now holds an overall record of 21-17 with a conference mark of 12-6. Southwestern is now 20-19 with a 9-9 SCAC mark.
But finishing at 12-6 in SCAC play was in serious doubt for TLU in the bottom of the 10th when the team twice was a strike away from defeat. Facing former teammate
Stephen Greenlees, the Bulldogs scratched across two unearned runs in the 10th with two walks, a wild pitch, and a fielding error.
With two outs in the 10th, TLU's
Ben Marvin lifted a fly ball into the windy night sky at Katt-Isbel Field. The pop fly was dropped near second base as both
Eric Rabinowitz and
Matthew Lemon raced home with the tying and winning runs, respectively.
Greenlees (0-3) took the loss despite five innings of work that produced seven strikeouts. He allowed three runs, but all three were unearned.
Ethan Mueller (1-2) picked up the win. He tossed the 10th for TLU and allowed one earned run. He struck out two.
Colby Schrade drove in a pair of runs for TLU in the late game. Lemon,
Spencer Brandt and
Rayce Gatlin also had RBI.
TLU walked 10 times against Southwestern pitching. The Pirates also hit three TLU batters.
In the early game, TLU took a 5-4 lead in the sixth only to have Southwestern erupt for four runs in the seventh and three more in the eighth.
TLU rallied for three runs in the ninth to close the six-run gap to three. The Bulldogs could not bring the tying run to the plate after a two-out, three-run triple from
Thomas Varner in the ninth.
Varner drove in four in the early game and had three hits. He scored twice.
In the SCAC tournament next weekend, TLU will face Trinity in the No. 2 v. No. 3 matchup. Southwestern will face regular-season champion Centenary.
