Record 34 straight wins, SCAC reg. season crown as TLU sweeps Trinity

SAN ANTONIO -- Texas Lutheran Softball set a new school record for consecutive victories with its 33rd and 34th straight wins in completing a four-game conference sweep of the Trinity Tigers on Saturday.

The Bulldogs completed a 22-0 run through the Southern Collegiate Athletic Conference regular season. TLU, 10th in the latest NFCA poll for NCAA Division III, moved its overall record to 34-4.

TLU secured its fourth consecutive SCAC regular-season championship. Even though the SCAC tournament site was pre-determined to be played at TLU's Ed Kruse Stadium - Morck Softball Field, TLU will not only be the tournament host but the top seed for the conference tournament, which runs April 28-30 in Seguin.

TLU took both ends of the Saturday doubleheader with 9-1 and 7-2 wins at Trinity Softball Field. Game one ended in five innings, and game two went the full seven.

TLU's run-rule victory in the early contest was the team's 17th run-rule win of 2017.

In that 9-1 victory, the Bulldogs put up four runs in the second inning. Kyla Lockley ripped a two-run triple, and TLU scored its first two runs with the help of Tiger errors.

The Bulldogs added four more runs in the fifth. Brayden Pinckard, Madisyn Cates and Lockley each drove in runs with singles, and Lockley and Kirsten Whiteside teamed up for a double steal during which Whiteside stole home.

Lockley delivered three hits and drove in three. Pinckard also had three hits, and she scored two runs and drove in a pair.

Amanda Lochte moved her season pitching record to 14-1. She scattered five hits and did not allow an earned run.

In game two, Maitlin Raycroft took a no-hitter into the sixth inning. Raycroft tossed her NCAA DIII-record eighth no-hitter Friday against the Tigers.

Trinity finally broke through for a hit against Raycroft with one out in the bottom of the sixth. The Tigers didn't stop there, adding two runs on three hits in the inning to erase a 2-0 TLU lead.

The Bulldogs bounced right back in the top of the seventh with a five-run frame. Nicole Snow belted a three-run home run to right field to provide the third, fourth and fifth runs of the inning.

The first two runs for TLU in the seventh came on sacrifice bunt RBI from Cassie Roche and Kaymee Gooden.

Raycroft stuck out the side in the seventh to close out the contest. The junior right-hander struck out 10 and allowed just three hits and the two earned runs. She pushed her season record to 18-2 and her school-record season strikeout total to 194 in 119-1/3 innings of work.

The two victories Saturday gave Head Coach Wade Wilson his 198th and 199th wins as TLU's head softball coach. In his sixth season with the Bulldogs, Wilson needs two wins to become the all-time wins leader in TLU Softball history.
