Malinovsky, Bulldogs capture first game of Schreiner series with 9-1 win

KERRVILLE, Texas -- Texas Lutheran sophomore right-hander Nathan Malinovsky won his third straight conference start by pitching eight strong innings Friday in a 9-1 Bulldog win at Schreiner University.

Malinovsky, last season's Southern Collegiate Athletic Conference Pitcher and Newcomer of the Year, struck out 11 and allowed just one earned run. He scattered four hits and worked around two walks and a wild pitch.

The Bulldogs put together a four-run second to give Malinovsky some immediate breathing room.

In the second, Tyler Cauley scored on a passed ball before TLU received RBI singles from Thomas Varner and Riley Schaefer. Varner later scored on a wild pitch.

TLU added two more runs in the third with a Cameron Wilson RBI groundout and an Eric Rabinowitz single.

Matthew Lemon collected four hits for the Bulldogs, and he scored a run. Schaefer recorded three hits, and Cauley added three runs scored and two hits.

Ben Marvin scored twice and had a pair of hits, and Wilson also registered two hits.

TLU improved to 17-10 overall and to 8-2 in the SCAC. Schreiner fell to 10-17 and 2-5 in the SCAC.

The two teams play a pair of 9-inning games Saturday in Kerrville. The first game of the doubleheader is set for a noon start.
