SEGUIN, Texas -- Texas Lutheran Baseball rode an improbable comeback in the early game Saturday to a three-game Southern Collegiate Athletic Conference sweep of defending national champion Trinity at TLU's Katt-Isbel Field.
TLU defeated Trinity 8-7 in 10 innings and 5-1 to improve to 14-7 overall and to 5-1 in the SCAC. Trinity dropped to 10-11 overall and to 2-4 in the SCAC.
After the Bulldogs won the first game of the series 10-2 Friday night, Trinity seemed poised to take the second game of the series (the first game Saturday) when it held a 7-4 lead entering the bottom of the ninth.
But using just one hit, the Bulldogs rallied to score three runs in the ninth to tie the game and won the game in the 10th on a fielder's choice ground ball off the bat of
Keaton Boysen.
In that three-run ninth, the Bulldogs were down to their last out with two runners aboard and still trailing 7-4. With
Thomas Varner and
Colby Schrade on base with walks,
Matthew Lemon walked to load the bases with two outs.
Taylor Sammons then singled to right to score Varner and trim the Trinity lead to 7-5.
Another walk - this time to
Eric Rabinowitz - brought home Schrade for the sixth TLU run.
Spencer Brandt was then hit by a pitch to score the seventh run.
In the 10th, Varner walked again and moved to third on a hit-and-run single by Schrade. With one out, Boysen hit a slow roller to short, and Varner scored as the throw skipped into home plate.
Varner, TLU's sophomore utility infielder, had two hits and scored twice in the early game. Sammons and Rabinowitz each registered two hits and drove in a run.
TLU against took advantage of walks issued by Trinity pitchers. The Tigers issued 10 walks and hit a batter.
In game three of the series, the late game Saturday, TLU junior right-hander
Dylan Drgac moved his pitching record to 4-0 with 7-2/3 innings of three-hit baseball. Drgac allowed just one run (unearned) and struck out nine.
Varner and
Riley Schaefer each collected three hits, and
Matthew Lemon delivered a two-run triple in the Bulldogs' four-run seventh inning.
The top five batters in the Bulldog lineup combined for 11 of TLU's 13 hits.
