SEGUIN, Texas -- Texas Lutheran Baseball took the first game of its three-game home conference series against Trinity with a 10-2 victory Friday night at Katt-Isbel Field.
The Bulldogs took advantage of nine walks, four wild pitches and four hit batters delivered by Trinity pitching.
The Bulldogs improved to 12-7 overall and to 3-1 in the Southern Collegiate Athletic Conference.
Trinity, the defending national champion in NCAA DIII, dropped to 10-9 overall and to 2-2 in the SCAC. The Tigers field an entirely new lineup with the graduation of all of their starting positional lineup from 2016.
Bulldog starter
Nathan Malinovsky (New Braunfels/New Braunfels) tossed 7-2/3 innings and defeated Trinity for the second straight time in conference play. Malinovsky, the sophomore right-hander, took a shutout into the eighth. He finished with four hits allowed and seven strikeouts. He gave up two runs (one earned).
Senior third baseman
Colby Schrade (Shiner/St. Paul) scored three times, walked three times and had one hit and one RBI.
Second baseman
Ben Marvin (Kingwood/Kingwood) added two hits and two RBI, and catcher
Spencer Brandt (Yoakum/Yoakum) reached base four times (two hit-by-pitch and two hits). He scored two runs.
