TLU Baseball rolls to road doubleheader sweep of Concordia



AUSTIN -- Texas Lutheran bounced back from a season-opening home loss Friday night against Concordia Texas by posting 8-0 and 16-3 wins over the Tornados Saturday afternoon at Tornado Field.

Ranked 10th and 21st in the two major NCAA DIII baseball polls, TLU improved to 2-1 overall with the non-conference series win over Concordia (1-2).

TLU started the day with a three-hit shutout gem from junior right-hander Cade Killingsworth (Missouri City/Ridge Point/North Central Texas). In the seven-inning contest, Killingsworth struck out six, walked one and allowed one extra-base hit (a double). He faced just two batters over the minimum.
 
Seven different Bulldogs drove in runs in the early game. Riley Schaefer (Thorndale/Thorndale) went 2-for-5 with a run scored and an RBI, and Rayce Gatlin (Orange Grove/Orange Grove/Coastal Bend JC) drove in a pair.
 
Shortstop Thomas Varner (Austin/Bowie) scored three runs, went 1-for-3 and had an RBI.
 
In the second contest, TLU trailed 2-1 entering the fifth inning before erupting for three in the fifth, three in the sixth, three in the seventh and six in the eighth.
 
The game was called in the eighth with the run rule.
 
Colby Schrade (Shiner/St. Paul/Trinidad JC) drove in five and went 3-for-6 with two runs scored, and Keaton Boysen (Scottsdale, Ariz./Desert Mountain/Gateway CC) added two RBI and two hits. Sami Resendez (Houston/Cypress Creek) also drove in two runs and had two hits.
 
Schaefer scored three times and collected two hits and an RBI, and Gatlin had two hits in three at-bats and scored twice. Varner produced three more runs and three more hits.
 
The top four in the Bulldog lineup - Schafer, Gatlin, Schrade and Boysen - combined to go 9-for-19 with eight runs scored and nine RBI.
 
Clint Johns (Orland, Calif./Orland/Shasta JC) picked up his first win as a Bulldog. The junior college transfer tossed 3-1/3 innings in relief. He allowed just three hits and one run (unearned).
 
TLU's next three games are set for next Friday, Saturday and Sunday at the Rusty Greer/Jackie Moore Classic in Grand Prairie, Texas. TLU will face Hardin-Simmons, Hendrix College and University of Texas at Dallas at AirHogs Stadium.
