GRAND PRAIRIE, Texas -- Texas Lutheran scored two runs in the second and added a key insurance run in the eighth to provide the winning margin in a 3-2 victory Sunday over the University of Texas at Dallas.
At AirHogs Stadium,
Tyler Cauley tripled and
Taylor Sammons singled to drive in runs in the second, and
Colby Schrade singled home
Rayce Gatlin with the Bulldog run in the eighth.
Gatlin started the one-out rally in the eighth with a single to third base and a throwing error that brought him to second. Schrade then singled to right field to score Gatlin.
In the top of the ninth, UT Dallas put a run across and had the tying run at second and the go-ahead run at first. TLU freshman right-hander
Jacob Wieder retired the last Comet on a groundout to short. Wieder recorded his first career save.
Clint Johns (2-0) tossed five innings for TLU and notched his second win in two appearances. Johns, making his first start as a Bulldog, scattered eight hits and allowed just one run.
Keaton Boysen,
Drew Waller and
Cameron Jones each pitched in relief before Wieder made his appearance in the ninth. Waller went 2-2/3 innings and was one out from the save. Jones, a left-hander, faced a left-handed batter before Wieder took on the final two batters. Wieder gave up a single to the first batter before the final out was recorded on the groundout to short.
TLU improved to 4-2 with the non-conference victory. The Bulldogs won two of three games at the Rusty Greer/Jackie Moore Classic. The Bulldogs started the tournament with a 12-11 loss Friday to Hardin-Simmons before defeating Hendrix College (Ark.) 13-9 on Saturday and then UT Dallas on Sunday.
TLU was out-hit Sunday 13-6. Schrade had two of TLU's six hits.
The Bulldogs return to action Tuesday night with a 7 p.m. home game against the University of Mary Hardin-Baylor.
TLU will have live video and live stats for the non-conference contest with the Crusaders.
