Texas Lutheran registers 82-74 home win over Hardin-Simmons


SEGUIN, Texas -- Matthew Gillette scored 18 and added 12 rebounds to lead the Texas Lutheran Bulldogs to an 82-74 home victory Friday against Hardin-Simmons University.

In TLU's Memorial Gymnasium, the Bulldogs (1-2) snapped a two-game losing skid to start the year. Both losses were by two points. HSU dropped to 0-2 with the non-conference loss.

Gillette (Spring/Klein) collected six of his game-high rebounds on the offensive glass. He made seven of his 11 shots attempts.

Gillette was joined in double figures for scoring by Nathan Josephs (14), Jackson Willoughby (12) and Shawn Hamilton (11).

Josephs (San Antonio/Clark) and Hamilton (San Antonio/MacArthur) also recorded double-doubles. Josephs had 11 rebounds, and Hamilton tallied 10 boards.

The Bulldogs out-rebounded HSU by 20, 56-36, and had a 23-10 edge in offensive rebounds. TLU out-scored HSU 31-11 on second-chance points.

TLU's rebounding edge led to 11 more shots.

Joe Hoeup led HSU with 18 points. Caleb Spoon added 15. Chris Barrett (13) and Marcus Ellison (12) also hit double figures for the Cowboys.

HSU last led in the game at 7-6, but the Cowboys stayed within six points for most of the second half. TLU's largest lead, 60-50, came at the 9:48 mark of the second half.

The Bulldogs shot 39.2 percent for the game. HSU shot 39.7 percent and made two more three-pointers.

HSU was hurt by 11 missed free throws.
