Bulldogs come up just short in Belton, falling 90-88 at UMHB

BELTON, Texas -- Texas Lutheran dropped a non-conference road game against Mary Hardin-Baylor 90-88 at UMHB's Mayborn Campus Center on Saturday evening.

TLU led by 14 in the first half and by six at the half, but the Bulldogs could not fend off the Cru rally down the stretch.

With the game tied at 82 and 1:21 to play, UMHB's Sam Moore drained a jumper to put the home team in front.

A free throw from Justin Gammill, a layup from Demarius Cress and two free throws from Moore gave UMHB a 7-0 run to push the lead to seven with 10 seconds to play. The seven-point lead would be UMHB's largest of the game.

TLU hit a pair of three-pointers in the final six seconds, sandwiched around a Cress free throw, to account for the final score.

UMHB improved to 2-0 overall. TLU dropped to 0-2. The Bulldogs' two losses to start the season have been by a combined four points.

Junior guard Nathan Josephs (San Antonio/Clark/Texas State) scored a team-high 23 points and added seven assists and six rebounds.

Fellow junior guard Jacob Kouremetis (San Antonio/O'Connor) came off the Bulldog bench to score a career-best 20 points, draining a career-high six three-pointers on eight attempts outside the arc. Kouremetis also tallied three assists.

Jackson Willoughby (Port Aransas/Port Aransas) and Shawn Hamilton (San Antonio/MacArthur) contributed 13 and 10, respectively.

Matthew Gillette (Spring/Klein) pulled down 15 rebounds and scored four points.

TLU out-rebounded the Cru 44-25 overall. Offensive rebounds went in favor of TLU by a count of 10-3.

The Bulldogs shot .517 from the field and .429 from the three-point line. TLU made 12 threes.

UMHB shot .492 for the game and .333 from the three-point line (7-for-21). The Cru made 15 free throws on 21 attempts in the second half.

Moore led the Cru with 22 oints. Cress added 20.

The Bulldogs are off until the day after Thanksgiving. The Bulldogs will host Hardin-Simmons in Memorial Gymnasium at 5 p.m. Friday. The Bulldogs then host McMurry at 5 p.m. in Memorial Gymnasium on Saturday.
