Rushing attack propels Bulldogs to 47-30 Homecoming victory over La. College



SEGUIN, Texas -- Texas Lutheran rushed for 358 yards and amassed 538 yards of total offense to pull away from Louisiana College 47-30 in Saturday's Homecoming victory for the Bulldogs.

The Bulldogs' offensive line and variety of running backs put together a running game that averaged 5.5 yards per rush over 65 attempts.

Freshman running back Christopher Monroe (College Station/College Station) and redshirt freshman running back J.C. Garcia (Port Lavaca/Calhoun) each went over the century mark.

Monroe rushed 22 times for 125 yards with three touchdowns, and Garcia recorded 120 yards on 16 carries with two scores, including a 50-yard TD to open the game's scoring. Garcia also scored on an eight-yard run with 11 seconds to play in the second quarter.

Monroe came within a rushing touchdown of tying the school record of four rushing touchdowns in a single game. Monroe scored on carries of 18, 10 and two yards.

Bulldog junior quarterback Kyle Grona (Fredericksburg/Fredericksburg) rushed for 66 yards and had a touchdown, and Ian Leslie (San Antonio/Reagan) added 49 yards on 10 carries.

Grona also threw for 180 yards, completing 15 of 27 passes and tossing a one-yard TD strike to Jekovan Holmes (San Antonio/O'Connor).

TLU won for the second straight week and improved to 3-2 overall and to 3-1 in the American Southwest Conference.

LC fell to 1-4 overall and to 0-4 in the ASC.

While the Wildcats threw for 302 yards, the TLU run defense again was stout against an opponent. The Bulldogs held LC to 19 rushing yards on 25 carries. TLU came into the game with the 14th-ranked rushing defense in NCAA Division III.

LC went 2-for-10 on third downs and was 0-for-1 on fourth down.

TLU converted 13 of 19 third downs and went 2-for-2 on fourth downs. The Bulldogs scored on six of seven red-zone scoring chances.

The Bulldogs overcame four fumbles (three lost) and an interception return for a touchdown by LC's Orel Ledet Jr.

TLU punted just twice all night.

Jacob Guercia led TLU with 10 total tackles. He added 2.5 tackles for loss. Emory Cuzze registered eight total tackles and had 0.5 tackles for loss.

The Bulldogs produced four sacks - by Dakwa Davis (Magnolia/Cypress Creek), Nwankwo Nwankwo (Richmond/Foster), Joshua Head (Houston/Cypress Creek) and Chris Moreno (San Marcos/San Marcos).

Nwankwo forced a pair of fumbles, and A.J. Mason (The Woodlands/The Woodlands) had an interception.

TLU hits the road next Saturday for a 2 p.m. road game at East Texas Baptist in Marshall, Texas.
