Bulldogs overcome double-digit deficits, knock off ETBU 41-34

MARSHALL, Texas -- The Texas Lutheran Bulldogs rallied from deficits of 14 in the first quarter and 13 in the third quarter, using another dominant performance from the running game and timely defensive plays, to secure a 41-34 road victory Saturday over East Texas Baptist.

Bulldog junior quarterback Kyle Grona (Fredericksburg/Fredericksburg) tied the school record for rushing touchdowns in a game, with four. He scored the game-winner, a 1-yard plunge, with a minute to play in the game.

TLU won its third consecutive game (and third straight conference game) to go to 4-2 overall and to 4-1 in the American Southwest Conference.

The Bulldogs have doubled their win total from a season ago.

TLU now sits in a tie for second place in the ASC with nationally-ranked Hardin-Simmons, who the Bulldogs host next Saturday in Seguin. Kickoff is set for 1 p.m. at TLU's Bulldog Stadium.

At ETBU's Ornelas Stadium, the Bulldogs held NCAA Division III's third-ranked scoring offense (53.0 points per contest entering game) scoreless in the fourth quarter and to 10 points in the second half. ETBU also had DIII's second-ranked passing offense. The Tigers finished the game 22-for-42 through the air with three touchdowns, an interception and four sacks.

Bulldog defensive end Ricky Sullivan (Round Rock/Stony Point) forced a fumble on ETBU's last-minute drive, and Manny Longoria (Geronimo/Navarro) recovered the fumble to seal the Bulldog victory.

ETBU dropped to 4-2 overall and to 3-2 in the ASC.

The Bulldogs trailed 34-21 with 5:29 to play in the third. TLU responded with three unanswered scoring drives.

Grona hit Jekovan Holmes (San Antonio/O'Connor) on a 40-yard TD pass with 2:36 to go in the third. Grona then rushed for the last two touchdowns - a seven-yarder with eight minutes to play and the game-winner.

The last TLU drive went 11 plays, covered 62 yards and took 5:22 off the clock. The Bulldogs rushed for 317 yards and averaged 4.7 yards per rush.

TLU rushed for five touchdowns. Jordan Braden (Humble/Summer Creek) had the other Bulldog score on the ground.

Grona carried the ball 28 times for 130 yards, and sophomore Ian Leslie (San Antonio/Reagan) ran for a career-best 148 yards on 23 carries.

Grona threw the ball 30 times and had 16 completions. He had the one touchdown to Holmes, and he did not toss an interception.

James Bell (Houston/Lamar) had an interception for the Bulldogs, and Keyshawn Holman (Orange/West Orange-Stark) picked up a pair of sacks. Longoria had 1.5 sacks. Holman, Emory Cuzze (Buda/Hays) and Adairius Norwood (Waco/Waco) each had eight total tackles.
