TLU Softball seniors end regular-season careers in style

SEGUIN, Texas -- Already assured of the outright Southern Collegiate Athletic Conference regular-season championship, third-ranked Texas Lutheran showed no letdown on Senior Day with 3-0 and 13-0 victories Saturday against Trinity University.

The two wins at Ed Kruse Stadium - Morck Softball Field completed the Bulldogs' four-game sweep of the Tigers (24-14, 17-7 SCAC).

Celebrating the careers of six seniors and one junior (a senior academically that will graduate), the Bulldogs improved to 37-2 overall and to 23-1 in the SCAC.

The Bulldogs will be the No. 1 seed in next weekend's SCAC Tournament, hosted by Trinity University in San Antonio.

TLU's senior class of Taylor Grissom, Heather Hummel, Taylor Yancey, Veny Pizana, Grace Estes, Megan Armistead and Jennifer Gallagher will be in pursuit of a third consecutive SCAC Championship and a third straight trip to the NCAA Division III Softball Championship (regional tournament play).

This TLU senior class won its 139th and 140th games as Bulldogs. This class of Bulldogs is 140-29 overall and 89-4 in conference play (one year in the American Southwest Conference and three years in the SCAC).

In Saturday's opener, Pizana tossed six innings of shutout softball. She picked up the win to improve to 9-1. Amanda Lochte retired three in the seventh to record her second save.

Hummel delivered a two-run double in the sixth that pushed the TLU lead to 3-0.

In game two, Kaymee Gooden and Brayden Pinckard each hit three-run home runs, and Lochte took a no-hitter into the fifth. The junior right-hander settled for a three-hit shutout. The game ended after five innings with the eight-run rule.

Lochte is now 12-1. She struck out three and did not walk a batter.

Gooden drove in four and had three hits. Pinckard drove in her three with the home run, and Yancey added a pair of hits, a pair of runs and an RBI.

The Bulldogs finished 2016 a perfect 18-0 at Ed Kruse Stadium.
