Lochte's 3-hit shutout caps No. 3 Bulldogs Friday sweep of Trinity


SEGUIN, Texas -- Junior right-hander Amanda Lochte tossed a three-hit shutout against Trinity on Friday as No. 3 Texas Lutheran picked up 7-6 and 5-0 victories at Ed Kruse Stadium.

TLU improved to 35-2 overall and to 21-1 in the Southern Collegiate Athletic Conference.

Trinity dropped to 24-12 overall and to 17-5 in the SCAC.

Lochte moved her pitching record to 11-1. The Fredericksburg product did not register a walk or a strikeout. She relied on her defense, who notched 15 ground-ball outs.

TLU gave Lochte a quick 4-0 lead in the first. Taylor Yancey and Kaymee Gooden each produced two-RBI singles in the opening frame.

The Bulldogs held on for the 7-6 win in the opener. TLU led 7-1 before Trinity rallied with five runs in the top of the seventh. The Tigers sent nine batters to the plate in the seventh and had the tying run on base and the potential go-ahead run coming to the plate.

TLU ended the game by throwing out a runner advancing to second.

Yancey and Nicole Snow each drove in two runs in the opener. Yancey and Kirsten Whiteside each had a pair of hits.

Taylor Grissom hung on for her 14th win against zero defeats. Samantha Yenne worked a third of an inning to notch her first save.

The Bulldogs and Tigers complete the four-game series with a noon doubleheader Saturday at Ed Kruse Stadium.
