SEGUIN, Texas -- Fourth-ranked Trinity bounced back from Friday's 8-5 defeat to Texas Lutheran by taking a pair from the Bulldogs Saturday afternoon at TLU's Katt-Isbel Field.
The Tigers (11-3) won 2-1 in the early game and 11-4 in the late game.
TLU dropped to 7-7 overall with the two non-conference losses.
The two teams meet April 8-9 in San Antonio in the three-game Southern Collegiate Athletic Conference series. This weekend's three games between TLU and Trinity were non-conference games.
In Saturday's first game, Trinity starter Teddy Turner picked up the win with seven strong innings. Turner improved to 2-0 by allowing six hits, walking two and striking out two.
Trinity reliever Troy Nelson entered the game in the eighth with runners on second and third, no outs, and the Tigers holding a 2-1 lead. Nelson retired three straight Bulldogs to get out of the jam. Nelson recorded a strikeout, an infield pop-up and a ground ball to first.
In the Tigers' two-run fifth, Nick Jewett doubled and scored, and Connor Moore and Andrew Waters delivered run-scoring hits. Waters doubled to score Jewitt, and Moore singled to score Waters.
Bulldog redshirt freshman right-hander
Nathan Malinovsky was the tough-luck loser. He tossed eight innings, struck out four and scattered nine hits. Both runs against him were earned. Malinovsky did not walk a batter.
First baseman
Justin Law gave TLU the early 1-0 lead with a sacrifice fly to right in the first inning.
In game two, the Bulldogs jumped to a 4-1 lead with an RBI groundout from
Keaton Bohrmann, an RBI single from
Riley Schaefer, a fielder's choice RBI from
Austin Frick, and a fielder's choice RBI from
Colby Schrade.
Trinity made three errors in the second inning, but TLU scored just once and left the bases loaded in the frame.
The Tigers broke the game open with four runs in the fifth and six more runs in the seventh.
Jeremy Wolf hit a three-run home run in the seventh. Wolf went 2-for-5.
Moore finished game two 4-for-5 with three runs scored and three RBI. Jake Martin went 2-for-3 with two runs scored.
Michael Walker (3-0) registered the game-two win for the Tigers. The left-hander pitched six inning and allowed four runs (three earned).
Cody Rimko (1-2) took the loss for TLU. The freshman right-hander allowed five runs, struck out one and walked one.
The Bulldogs used six pitchers in the second game.
TLU has 7 p.m. home games this Tuesday and Wednesday against Baldwin-Wallace (Ohio) and DeSales (Pa.) before hosting Schreiner University on Friday and Saturday in the SCAC-opening three-game series.
