SEGUIN, Texas -- Texas Lutheran outlasted No. 4-ranked Trinity 8-5 Friday night in the first game of a non-conference series between Southern Collegiate Athletic Conference rivals.
TLU scored two runs in the seventh and two runs in the eighth to pull away from the Tigers, who dropped to 10-3 overall.
TLU improved to 7-5 with the home victory at Katt-Isbel Field.
Sophomore right-fielder
Riley Schaefer (Thorndale/Thorndale) went 3-for-4 with two RBI. He collected an RBI double in the first and an RBI single in the fifth.
Bulldog senior first baseman
Justin Law (Houston/Atascocita/Temple JC) recorded an RBI double in the fifth and an RBI single in the eighth. Law's single put TLU up 7-5.
Aaron Milone (Houston/The Woodlands) picked up the win in relief to improve to 3-0.
Derek Cantu (George West/George West) notched his second save of the season. Cantu worked out of a bases loaded jam in the ninth.
Lincoln Baylor (Schertz/Clemens) started for the Bulldogs and worked six innings, allowing five earned runs. Ryan Gray started for Trinity and allowed six earned runs in 6-1/3 innings of work.
Colby Schrade (Shiner/St. Paul/Trinidad JC),
Alejandro Gutierrez (Pharr/PSJA North), and
Eric Rabinowitz (Schertz/Clemens) each scored a pair of runs. Rabinowitz was 1-for-1 with two walks and a sacrifice.
TLU and Trinity resume the three-game series Saturday with a 1 p.m. doubleheader at Katt-Isbel Field. TLU will have live video and live stats on tlubulldogs.com for both games.
